August 10th, 2019
Nearly 4 years into marriage and believe it or not, I still enjoy spending time with my hubby! During the off-season our weekends are filled with trying out new restaurants and breweries, lounging by the pool, and taking long walks with the pup.
When football season starts, the ability to do all of these things together is nearly non-existent.
Flashback to the 2018 Football Season
During the 2018 football season, I kept myself (kind of) busy with a a job that didn't have traditional hours (I took as many weekend shifts as possible!) as well as coursework toward my Master's Degree. Additionally, I took a new position out-of state mid-season (Again, sorry hubby!!), meaning a lot of my weekends were spent packing and unpacking boxes.
Here She Comes- the 2019 Football Season
As the 2019 season approached, I knew this year would be more of a challenge. I had completed my Master's Degree, there are no impromptu moves planned, and I work a standard 9-6, M-F job. Oy with the Saturdays!
I knew I couldn't spend my Saturdays solely playing with the dog and watching re-runs of FRIENDS, so I had to come up with a plan.
Now, to be fare, knitting was also ALWAYS a part of this plan! I started knitting in January of 2017, and it has brought me so much joy since! However, I have also been fighting hand pain when I knit too much. I knew my hands wouldn't be able to take a weekend completely full of knitting, so more activities needed to be added to the agenda.
Luckily, I had a bit of inspirations from a local quilt shop. Walking the dog around our downtown, I had consistently passed this quilt shop. I hadn't sewn in years and had never considered quilting but.. with all of this free time... maybe it was time to start that up again.
I thought about all of the bags and pillows I used to make as a little girl- all of the joy it brought me giving people something I had made!
My pinterest has been filled with sewing patterns for skirt, bags, dresses and pillows. When better to start diving into those patterns than football season?!
The Quilt Shop
I always get extremely shy and nervous when walking into new business, especially local ones! But on August 9th, I bit the bullet. With a little bit of encouragement from my hubby- I entered this adorable quilt shop with a nervous smile on my face and a teeny tiny list of supplies needed to make a project bag for my knitting projects.
Oh my goodness- I felt like a kid in a candy store! The colors, patterns, supplies. The ladies working in there were so nice and helped direct me to the fat quarters.
Bag Supplies
I had to have walked around for a good 30 minutes before coming up with a few sets of fat quarters That I was completely in love with.
Then came the big one- A ZIPPER!! I had never made anything with a zipper before. Zippers are SO INTIMIDATING if you haven’t worked with them before!
I was looking for a specific size, and the kind ladies helped explain that yes, you can cut a zipper 😆 I felt so naive, but they were so sweet and encouraging! I left there feeling so happy and so motivated to begin my first sewing project in years.
The Project Bag
The pattern I used for this bag was the Cute Corners Cosmetics Case by Sew Can She.
I didn’t add the snaps for the edges, but I loved the way the zipper was set in the bag because it allowed for a lot more space, which I really enjoy with a project bag for my knitting!
The fabric I picked out was too stinking cute for this bag! It’s small, but fits a hat or a pair of mittens well.
So here it is in all of its coffee cup and polka dot glory!! The first of many many sewing projects to come.
